RGBV3D benchmark

Representative lab samples—not a guarantee for your files. Grainy scans often lose to PNG; compare before archiving.

How these numbers were produced

Each row uses a fixed fixture kept in the RGBV3D research repo. We rasterize to 8-bit RGB (no alpha), encode with classic and vector-v2 at default block settings, then measure payload size on disk. PNG sizes come from a single encoder preset so comparisons stay apples-to-apples within this table—not against every PNG tool on the internet.

Raw KB is width × height × 3 / 1024. Ratios against raw show container overhead plus compression; ratios against PNG show whether RGBV3D is competitive for archival experiments. We deliberately include losing rows: grainy scans and noisy photos routinely expand. If a marketing site only shows the gradient win, treat that as incomplete.

Re-run locally with the CLI benchmark command after installing @rgbv3d/core. Browser encode on this site uses the same profiles but may differ by a few percent due to canvas color-space or JPEG decode path before rasterization.

How to read the table

Prefer vector-v2 when samples look like UI chrome or smooth synthetic art. Prefer classic (or stay on PNG) when samples look like camera noise or paper grain. Never batch-convert a mixed album without sampling each category. For sharing outside the RGBV3D toolchain, export PNG from the image tool after decode.
